There’s always something going on with the Springville First United Methodist Church Children’s Ministry! With a strong emphasis on missions, our leaders and volunteers strive to promote good works and spiritual growth among the children of our church and our greater community.
Children from pre-school through sixth grade meet for Sunday School at 10am in the Kid’s Cove section of our educational building. Children’s activities are also held after the church-wide Wednesday night dinner. Fourth- through sixth-graders use this time to prepare for confirmation into the United Methodist Church.
One of our biggest children’s events is Summer Vacation Bible School. For the past several years, our church has foregone pre-packaged VBS formats and has branched out into new territory. We’ve hosted a Christian illusionist and a Christian story-teller who each brought the word of God to life in new ways. We’ve also put together our own VBS events based upon the God-given skills and talents of our members. Our leaders have tried hard to ensure that the spirit of missions has underlain our recent Vacation Bible Schools, and we hope to continue that practice in the future.
The Children’s Ministry always ushers in the Christmas Season with a special play or pageant. Sometimes this consists of a traditional retelling of the Nativity story while other years a play with a Christmas theme is performed. We also decorate a float for the Springville Christmas parade and go Christmas caroling.
Additional children’s events include:
- Service Week—This summer event is a great way for our children to be visible and active within their own community. This year, older children performed volunteer work at the elementary school, library and senior citizen’s center while younger children prepared snacks for the high school band, baked cookies for police and firefighters and cooked breakfast for one of our church volunteer groups.
- Blessing of the Backpacks—Every August, our schoolchildren and educators are encouraged to bring their school supplies, backpacks and educational planners to the altar during the contemporary service for a special prayer and blessing. A team also travels to the schools to pray for blessings during the upcoming year.
- Treats On Main/Fall Festival—Our church hosts a fall festival in conjunction with Springville’s Treats On Main event. We offer games, activities and goodies for children of all ages.
- Special Trips—A few times a year our children go on special outings. Previous trips have included visits to the Birmingham Zoo and Ave Maria Grotto. Summer pool parties at a local neighborhood pool and a back-to-school ice cream social are also popular gatherings!
